Popular Rituals of an Indian Hindu Wedding

Indian weddings are always bright and colorful and perhaps this is why they are widely popular in various parts of the world. Recognized for their grandeur and splendor, the Hindu wedding arrangements at foreign locations such as London are equally catchy and attractive. However, the most important thing that a Hindu wedding is associated with is the rites and rituals that are considered sacred and auspicious.

Though every community of the Hindu religion has its unique and distinctive wedding ceremony, there are some rituals that are common and very popular in all Hindu weddings, irrespective of caste, community and religion. You may opt for a modern Hindu wedding with contemporary decoration and furnishing, but without the popular wedding rituals, a Hindu marriage is incomplete. Here we bring for you some of the mandatory rites and rituals of an Indian Hindu wedding:

Kanyadaan: Done by the parents of the bride, this is an auspicious and dutiful act where the father of the bride, quite literally, gives the hand of his daughter to the groom. It is considered as the start of a new life of the couple with the blessings of their parents. When the father of the bride places the right hand of the bride in that of the groom, the bride’s mother pours water on their hand as a mark of purity and unity.

Saat phere or the seven vows of marriage: Another very essential ritual of the Hindu wedding is the saat phere where the bride and the groom take the seven vows of marriage by going around the sacred fire seven times. It is stated that this ritual stands as a symbol of unity and acceptance for the couple to live together for eternity.

Sindoor or the vermillion ceremony: Sindoor or vermillion is considered as a sacred symbol of marriage that is used by married Indian women. Hence the sindoor ceremony undoubtedly holds immense significance in a Hindu marriage as it is also accepted as a symbol of protection for the couple from evil powers.

Mangalsutra: Not only a piece of jewelry, the mangalsutra is another auspicious symbol in the Hindu marriage that is believed to keep evils at bay. The groom ties the mangalsutra, a necklace made of black beads and gold, around the neck of the bride on the wedding day as a symbol of being together.

Garland exchange or jaimala: Finally, there is the garland exchange ceremony in a Hindu wedding where the couple interchanges the garland as an acceptance to live their life together.

Apart from the above stated rituals, there are lots of other wedding activities that take place in an Indian Hindu wedding. Continuing for a span of over 3-4 days, a Hindu wedding is truly a ceremony of fun, frolic and enjoyment.
