Significance of the Mehndi in an Indian Wedding Ceremony

The Indian wedding ceremony is a highly diversified event which is at the same time dynamic and vibrant. There are a lot of ceremonies and rituals involved in the process and one of them is the mehndi. It is here that the bride is ornamented with henna with the name of her groom inscribed in an intricate pattern on her palm. Since Hinduism believes in the palm lines determining the course of your fate, the inscription of the husband’s name on the hands of the wife is an effort to spin the lines of fate. This is done so as to ensure that the couple stays together forever.

Mehndi Ceremony

The mehndi is supposed to be imprinted on the bride’s palm in dark color. In fact, the darker the color, the more the husband loves her. The mehndi ceremony is attended by ladies and it is generally a private affair that is conducted in the presence of friends, relatives and family members. However, these days, the ceremony is conducted with a lot of pomp and display. The arms, legs, feet and hands of the bride are ornamented with henna by a mehndi expert. The ritual is generally characterized with merrymaking and women chanting traditional songs to the beats of the dholak.

The paste of the henna is applied on the palm of the bride by grinding the dried henna leaves. These days, to avoid the pain of creating the paste, readymade mehndi powder is available at select stores, and all you need to do is prepare a solution for application. The styles of mehndi application include the Tattoo mehndi, Crystal mehndi and Arabic mehndi. The bride is not permitted to do any work in the house until the color of the mehndi fades. The mehndi ritual is of utmost importance.

You can select a mehndi artiste for applying the henna on the bride’s palms. The wedding planning agencies have come up these days, and one of their responsibilities is to offer a number of suggestions and choices for the application. Before choosing the artiste, you should study their experience and expertise in the field as your special day will be otherwise spoiled. Free samplings are also offered by some artistes so that you have a fair idea of what they have to offer.

The mehndi ceremony is among the many traditions that characterize an Indian wedding. The latter is a highly diversified event and the mehndi just adds a speck of color to the entire canvas. The different rituals of a typical Indian wedding are marked with age old tales and superstitions that make the event iridescent and exotic. Make sure you are a part of it and enrich your experience.
